Flat and cozy slopes on the Dniester right bank in the vicinity of Purcari village once belonged to the foreign Aphono-Zagrafsky Monastery. Local favourable terraced relief attracted settlers who made Purcari land their home and set about planting vineyards. They got perpetual tenure from the monastery and undertook to pay them 1/10 of their profit and 1/10 of grapes gathered. The dominant Monastery's requirement "was planting vineyards, cultivating and keeping them in good condition". Many of them realized that warm and humid Black Sea winds and sandy-argillaceous soil of Purcari Region would enable them to grow remarkable grapes there, it was to be the first step in creating Purcari wines of good quality.

The modern-day winery produces its wine, which is matured for years in oak casks, in very limited batches. Negru de Purcari, a dry red vintage wine from the Purcari area of Bender District (the Southwestern wine zone) is locally called the “Queen of England’s wine,” because Queen Elizabeth II regularly orders the 1990 vintage. The recipe for this wine has been considered a secret for centuries, although everyone knows its ingredients: French varieties of Cabernet and Sauvignon, Georgian Saperavi, and Moldovan Rara Neagra.
