Browse by Grape - Tempranillo

Without doubt Spain's greatest grape, and the one which forms the basis of most Rioja. A good grape to age but one which can be accessible early, and although frequently blended with other varieties (such as Garnacha, Carignan, Monastrell, Viura) it can achieve a pure fruited and spice-driven wine when used on its own (often in the Ribera del Duero region). Through the outstanding quality found in many of Ribera del Duero's top reds Tempranillo is starting to take a grip on vineyards all over the world. Also known as Tinto Roriz (and Aragonez!) in Portugal, Tinto Fino in the Ribera del Duero region, Tinto de Pais in Toro, and Cencibel in la Mancha (you could almost write a book on the varying names for Tempranillo!).

Drink now, but will keep

Toro is some 90 minutes further west from Ribera del Duero, close to the Portuguese border. The Puerto Novas winery makes limited amounts of wine from a 15 hectare parcel of old bush vines varying in age between 40 and 100 years old. They benefit from long, hot summers with cool, crisp nights to produce wines with great balance between fruit and acidity.

The wine has aromas of bright fruit with scents of raspberry, strawberry and a hint of smoke. The flavour starts with fruity strawberries backed by soft, sweet tannins and as it opens up in the glass, plum and blueberry accents come more to the fore. A good partner for robust red meats and cheese.
