Browse by Producer - Niepoort

Without doubt the most underrated port house. Owned and run by a Dutch family their expertise in all fields is not disputed. Their comparative lack of fame is really down to smaller production levels than the Taylors and Fonsecas of this world, but the quality of just about everything with their name on is without question. Niepoort are the masters of vintage tawnies or 'Colheitas' which epitomise elegance and finesse. They also have a fantastic Single Quinta Port, Quinta do Passadouro.
James Suckling of the USA's Wine Spectator magazine, and one of port's most respected critics said 'what Krug is to champagne, Niepoort is to Vintage Port'. Jancis Robinson said, at 'the port tasting of the century', that Niepoort's ports probably came top 'in terms of impact made per bottle opened'. The only port to score higher from the 1997 vintage was over $500 per bottle. We could go on, but we think you get the picture!
Add to this recent bottlings of magnificent table wines, both red and white, and the resultant portfolio is more than just outstanding, its positively awesome!

Golden in colour, this exhibits a complex aroma of dried fruits dominated by orange peel and dried figs, as well as walnuts and roasted almonds. A floral touch completes the aroma. On the palate it is very fine and balanced, with a vibrant acidity balancing it´s sweet character, interacting with the fortifying spirit to perfection and giving the wine a superb structure.

Fine, elegant, mineral but not balsamic. The taste continues fine, agressive and with tannins, rich but not excessive and with a long final. Impressive finesse even though robust.
