Many would argue that Burgundy is one of the two most important wine regions in the world. Others would say the wines, despite the obvious quality of many, are poor value and often very disappointing. Both of these points of view have some truth but there is no doubting that when at their finest the wines of Burgundy can be some of most exciting and exhilerating taste experiences in existence. The world's most complex dry white wine comes from the Côte de Beaune, and some of the world's most elegant reds come from the Côte d'Or. These are the two regions responsible for Burgundy's highest quality wines, yet there are several other areas of equal importance. Beaujolais, for instance, sometimes produces more wine than the rest of Burgundy put together, and the Maconnais and Chablis are names synonymous with easy drinking whites although if one digs a little deeper there are dazzling wines to be found too. The wines are named after the areas in which they are grown - Chassagne-Montrachet, Aloxe-Corton, Nuits St. George, Pouilly-Fuissé etc. as opposed to areas such as Bordeaux where the wine is named after the actual producer. This means that there may be many growers under a single name although there are some unusual cases where a single property (such as La Romanee Conti, Clos de Tart and La Tache) is owned by one producer - these are called Monopoles. Vineyards regarded as superior are called Premier Crus and the exceptional sites Grand Crus. It is in this system where the problem with a lack of consistency in quality is found. Le Corton may indeed be a great name and many great wines are made under that name, but if a poor wineMaker owns property in Le Corton he is entitiled to call his wine Le Corton and classify it Grand Cru even if ithe quality is not good. Consequently many wine lovers are wary of Burgundian wines - the name of the wine is no gurantee of quality; look for the name of the producer instead.

A new classification—Coteaux Bourguignons—was created in 2011 to replace two older classifications.
Essentially, “Coteaux Bourguignons” translates to the “hills of Burgundy,” and wines labelled under this designation have no restrictions attached. That means you can find red, rosé, and white wines that might be a single varietal-wine or a blend of grapes. Reds are usually made from a blend of pinot noir & gamay which go together rather well!
Coteaux Bourguignons allows fruit to be sourced from greater Burgundy & Beaujolais regions. Domaine de la Creuze Noire Coteaux Bourguignons is a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay which gives an exceptionally smooth soft approachable wine.

Pale gold with just a hint of green, the nose is fresh and beautifully precise. Green apple, lemon zest, a touch of white flowers and a mineral seam of flint or crushed seashells. On the palate it is taut and lively: citrus (grapefruit, lime), crisp unripe pear with racy acidity giving real freshness. The mineral backbone shines through, lending tension and drive. There’s generous fruit ripeness without heaviness, no oak influence and a drying finish that leaves a vivid streak of salinity and subtle citrus bitterness. A fine example of classic Chablis — pure, clean and elegant

Bright ruby colour with garnet hues, this wine opens with a refined nose of red cherry, wild strawberry and a subtle forest floor earthiness. Floral hints, perhaps violet, peek out alongside soft spice and delicate mineral undertones. On the palate it is elegant, medium-bodied: fresh acidity supports polished tannins with clean red fruit flavours complemented by subtle herbal or underbrush notes. The finish is of good length, showing purity of fruit and a graceful mineral thread. While very enjoyable now, it still has capacity to evolve for several more years.

Pale straw with green tinged highlights. On the nose there is an elegant mix of white flowers, lemon zest, green apple and a thread of crushed stone or slate minerality backed by subtle oak spice—vanilla, a touch of toast. The palate is medium to medium full with fresh citrus and orchard fruit (pear, apple) framed by creamy texture from lees ageing. The oak is present but well integrated: it adds depth without overwhelming. A crisp, mineral acidity lends lift and the finish is long, clean with lingering stone fruit and citrus peel alongside a gentle salinity and a subtle nut/almond note. Lovely balance; enjoyable now but capable of further development over a few more years.

The 2019 Givry Crausot 1er Cru has an intense bouquet, the fruit darker than the à Vigne Rouge, very well defined with a touch more spiciness. The palate is well balanced with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, quite fleshy towards the finish with cranberry and raspberry lingering on the aftertaste. This remains a quality Givry from one of Givry’s best producers.

Pale gold in the glass with a bright, slightly green tinged rim. On the nose it offers crisp orchard fruit; green apple, white peach with lemon zest and a whisper of stone fruit. There’s a mineral undercurrent, crushed limestone, faint flint and a subtle floral lift (something like acacia or white blossom) plus a soft background of toasted oak or warm vanilla. The palate is medium to full with vibrant acidity that brings freshness. Fruit is clean and pure: citrus and peach maybe a touch of apricot. The oak is present but well integrated adding creaminess without overwhelming the fruit. The minerality cuts through, giving a chalky texture, and the finish is long, elegant with saline tension and lingering citrus and stone notes. This is a wine with both immediacy and capacity to evolve over a few years.

Located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, Domaine Jacqueson’s 18 hectares of vines are spread across some of the region’s best growing sites, including Mercurey, Rully, and Bouzeron. The estate farms their vineyards without herbicides and highlights the importance of keeping yields low. This varietal Chardonnay is more floral and less opulent than most Côte de Beaune bottlings, marked by flavors of mandarin, lemon skin, crushed rocks, and white blossom. Great quality to price ratio!
