Rías Baixas is Galicia's quality DO, established in 1988 and dedicated almost exclusively to the production of whites.
It now consists of 1793 hectares with more than 120 producers.
The climate is Atlantic with high rainfall and mild temperatures There are 5 authorised white varieties - foremost of which are Albariño and Loureiro - and 6 black.
Rias Baixas has received a lot of attention lately for the Alabariños produced there, generally unwooded they produce fresh, blossomy, citrus wines which many consumers are turning to as an alternative to heavy, overoaked Chardonnays.
