Second only to Sangiovese in terms of red vines planted in Italy, and now found in both north and south America. Its high acidity lends the variety to hotter climates, and it has developed different characteristics in different parts of Italy. Its characteristics vary from light and relatively low in tannin for easier drinking to big powerful wines made for the cellar.
