Perhaps the least well-known of the Bordeaux varieties, rarely planted in any quantity nowadays. Thick-skinned (and therefore tannic), but with an attractive spicy note, it is rarely, if ever, bottled on its own, more commonly found in small quantities in blends.

A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Dense ruby/purple, with notes of blueberry pie interwoven with charcoal, liquorice, some chalky crushed rocks and a distinctive floral note. The wine is succulent and fleshy, with low acidity and layers of fruit. A sensational effort from this cru bourgeois

This superb 5th Growth Pauillac is owned by the Rothschild family, now for the third generation. With vineyards perfectly positioned next to First Growths Lafite and Mouton, the only surprise is its classification isn't higher. A 95-pt masterpiece.
