The quality at Jumilla has never been better, but instead of the standard everyday drinking reds a lot of much higher quality wines are being produced.
The area itself is almost 43,000 hectares with vineyards at between 400 and 800 feet above sea level. There are over 4000 growers in the area who have worked tirelessly to improve quality across the board. More red than white grapes are grown here, mainly Tempranillo, Tintorera and Monastrell on the local front, but also some Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot.
Jumilla is one of the few wine-making areas to have some phylloxera-free vine areas (around 2000 hectares!) that are known locally as 'pie franco' and consist of original non-grafted rootstocks.
