Browse by Grape - Cabernet Franc
One of the lesser known Bordeaux red varieties although its more prominent in the Loire Valley. Despite this the legendary name of Château Cheval Blanc has occasionally had a 100% Cabernet Franc make up in its wine. Normally blended in Bordeaux but often bottled undiluted in the Loire, this rich red grape should produce a wine with a raspberry character with more apparent fruitiness than its more Famous Cabernet Sauvignon cousin. Now planted across the wine globe, with worthy mentions going to New Zealand and Australia.

In each of the three ranges from this winery - Serbal, Catalpa and Atamisque - there is a blend, an assemblage. Catalpa Assemblage is comprised of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec in varying proportions depending on the vintage. 60% of this wine is aged for 12 months in new French oak barrels, 40% in stainless steel prior to blending and a further 6 months in bottle prior to release. Crafted in a fairly extravagant style this is a lovely, plump, velvet textured delight with clever use of oak in evidence, capable of developing very nicely for 8 - 10 years.

Colour: Dark garnet red
Bouquet: dark berry fruits with undertones of dried herbs and cigar box.
Palate: Elegant and refined with lovely berry fruits framed by supple savory tannins.
Grapes were destemmed, sorted and crushed into small batches for ferment. Wines were fermented with wild yeast, gaining layered complexity. Extended time on skins post fermentation gave the wine greater depth and savoury characteristics. The wine was pressed, and racked to oak for maturation. It was then left to evolve in oak for 16 months before blending for bottling.

Acquired by Antoine Moueix in 1953, Château Tauzinat L'Hermitage is now managed by Claire Moueix, a young talented winegrower who represents the latest generation in this family vintage. The nine hectares of vineyard, planted with 85% Merlot and the rest in Cabernet Franc, extend over the municipalities of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes and Saint-Hippolyte, with a beautiful clay-limestone soil on limestone bedrock to asteria.
As for the name of the domain, it comes from the Tauzins oaks that border the property, a species famous for the truffles that grow nearby. Some fine gourmets will also see the promise of a magical culinary match…
Tauzinat L'Hermitage produces a charming, supple and generous wine with heather, cherry, strawberry and blackberry notes, sometimes finely chocolatey, with elegant oak.
