Souzão (Sousão, Vinhão, Sousón)

Souzão (Sousão, Vinhão; Spanish: Sousón) is Portuguese wine grape that is used in the production of port wine. While originating in the Minho regions, it is used primarily in Australia, California and South Africa. In Portugal, it is also an authorized planting in the Douro, and Dão-Lafões area (Vinho do Dão). The grape is known for the deep color it produces in a wine as well as its coarse and raisiny taste.

In Australia Souzao is used to make port style wines and also table wines, often blended with other Portuguese grape varieties.

Ready to drink

With its brilliant red appearance and brick red hues on the rim, the wine offers refined aromas of cherries along with a subtle perfumed floral character as well as superb finesse. Essentially the wine is elegant in style, however, the palate presents somewhat of an enigma – initially the fruit and elegance on the nose comes through on the palate, but with gentle extract. It is superbly balanced and fresh, culminating in a somewhat robust and firm finish with a tannic grip. It will be interesting to see this wine develop as it ages, undoubtedly, in a very elegant manner.

NOTE: THIS IS A HALF BOTTLE (37.5CL) The wine displays a beautiful, brilliant chestnut colour with russet hints. Its incredibly intense and rich aromas feature dried fruit, candied fruit and caramel. The palate offers a smooth and fresh mouthfeel, carried by a beautiful acidity and distinct notes of dried fruit, culminating in a very long, elegant and velvety finish.
